THE PUEBLO AND THE PROPERTY
This is a village of steep stairs and streets, many of which too narrow for cars. It takes a puebloday or two to get used to them but all the better for it. The approach from the village is through the 15 century gate arch via one of these impassable streets (pic left) - but don't worry, access by car is available by another street, the Questo.

This property is a historically listed building. This means that you cannot change its frontal appearance (much)...but anyway, with walls a metre thick, you wouldn't want to.

The property has three floors. The building itself is very old but in the last thirty years quite a lot of modernisation has been done. Firstly the whole building was anchored into the rock face with a high tensile ferro concrete collar so it will never move away from the rock face. All the main ceiling have been renewed and rebeamed and the walls treated from time to time but it must be understood that from such old construction material, dust is inevitable in a few areas. Dampness also appears occasional in a very wet winter and although we have just had one in the winter of 2009/2010, bad and wet winters, although more common than thirty years ago, are still rare.

THE MAIN BAR This is the heart of Bar Time & Place, it combines beautiful art DecoMAINBAR interiors with traditional Spanish architecture. Visitors are first struck by the natural rock face behind the bar, which has been carefully treated to ensure the integrity of the bar while maintaining its natural beauty (remember this is a historic listed building which is believed to go back to pre Christian, Moorish Spain). The walls are about a metre thick. The bar counter runs in a long subtle S bend and is made of beautifully hand laid and polished oak parquets. There is an powerful air conditioning plant fitted in the main bar.

To the left is a view of the back bar. Above the counter, hand crafted lights on dimmers and clever use of mirrors complete the effect, creating a room where several small groups can enjoy a quiet chat – or where a large group can have a secluded party.

Air conditioning and large overhead fans ensure that conditions are comfortable whilst remaining unobtrusive. In winter, the heat from the wood stove in the cave keep the place warm and cozy.

THE FRONT TERRACE The beautiful Plaza del Flores (plaza of flowers) provides the backdrop for the bar terrace, which is opens out onto the street along the front of the bar. Being a pedestrian area only, customers are never bothered with the intrusion and fumes BARATNIGHTof traffic which often spoil the open areas of other bars.

The key word here is relaxation – it’s easy to get lost in a long drink in probably the most tranquil part of the town, amidst the flowers and the scent of the bougainvillea blossoms.

HOUSETHE STREET AS TERRACE Tables are set along the street immediately opposite the bar, from before Easter until usually sometime in October and so more than double the bar's capacity in the tourist season, while allowing people to sit outside in the rare peace of a car free pedestrian street while, enjoying the freshest of outdoor ambience... rent for the street is aid to the Town Hall
All in all, the perfect spot to unwind and relax...

THIS BOTTOM FLOOR REMAINS A BAR, IT WAS CLOSED IN OCTOBER 2009 AND TO REOPEN WOULD REQUIRE AN OPENING LICENCE.

THE FIRST FLOOR at the moment consists of a large room (24 square metres) and a professional kitchen (intended for restaurant use) with a small terrace overlooking the street. Off the kitchen is a complete bathroom with shower, sink and lavatory - to be an en suite bathroom should it be converted back to a house again.

THE MAIN ROOM has a very high ceiling with wooden beams throughout the building, renewed about twelve years ago. It has two windows overlooking the street, one entirely unique (see pic) as the young bougainvillea intertwined its branches with the rejas (iron windowdecorative window guard) to create the most wonderful underwater effect when the sun is fully on it. There is a door onto a small street terrace between the two windows, also overlooking the street.

In the back corner there is an open fire surrounded by built in concealed metal tanks. fireplaceIntended for wood logs which are available locally, when the fire is lit, natural convection draws the cool air in from the room through lower vents and and then wafts it out as warm air through higher vents, warming the room in a few minutes...and there is nothing quite like like the scent of an occasional sandlewood log.

PROFFESSIONAL KITCHEN At one time it was intended to have a restaurant in the big room so the bedroom next to it on the middle floor was turned into a professional kitchen. The restaurant never opened.

EN SUITE BATHROOM Last year a a bathroom with shower, sink and lavatory was added from space behind the kitchen (see pic) to provide an en suite bathroom if the kitchen area is turned back into a bedroom again.

TOP FLOOR New stairs lead up to the top of the house, which consists of a new modern bathroom in fashionable grey tiles, a space outside that includes a built in wardrobe with louvered doors leading towards the main bedroom through a space utilised now as a kitchenette complete with sink in an built in cupboard and a good working covering a smallish fridge and a washing machine.

THE MAIN BEDROOM (see pics) has a spectacular view through four shuttered windows of thelower village and the countryside to the sea a mile away. This bed room has an air conditioning plant fitted for comfortable sleeping at the height of the summer!

LARGE TOP TERRACE From the bedroom, steps lead down to a large terrace (32 square metres) punctuated at the far end by the bougainvillea that has grown up from the street below over the last thrifty five years or so. Planted by the previous owner, the tenor saxophonist,Dick Charlesworth and while growing up past three floors of the building, it also intertwined its way through the two iron rejas of the ground floor and first floor windows.
